The founding of Wilson Preparatory Academy began with Daryl M. Woodard and his wife, Shawan Barfield Woodard. Daryl M. Woodard, founded his own nonprofit, Smart Choices for Youth, Inc. (formerly Wayne County Youth Outreach) in 1989, managing federal, state and local grant funds focused on mentoring, after-school programming and improving academic and behavioral performance to thousands of youth for over 25 years. His wife, Shawan Woodard, a former middle school teacher, have served thousands of youth and families together since 1998 through various in-school and after-school researched based funded and innovative youth programs. Mr. and Mrs. Woodard researched a blended learning charter school concept to expand their services through the development of a new innovative, technology based college preparatory academy. This birthed the idea for Wilson Preparatory Academy.
Community leaders came together at the beginning of 2012 to discuss establishing the first K-12 Charter School in Wilson, NC. After much conversations and research, Wilson Preparatory Academy was formally introduced to the public. Wilson Preparatory Academy is for all school age children in the community. Through an integrated and comprehensive blended learning curriculum tailored to every student regardless of background, learning style, career or college pathway.
On January 9, 2014, Wilson Preparatory Academy was given final approval by the NC State Board of Education to open up as a K-8 Charter School. Our charter calls for adding a grade every year until we become a K-12 school in the 2018/2019 academic year. We are committed to small class sizes with caring teachers and staff. We are excited about serving school age children in the Wilson County area starting in August 2014! By law, we can even enroll students residing in any county in North Carolina! We are excited about the opportunity to educate school age children in Wilson and surrounding counties.
Wilson Preparatory Academy will provide every student with a quality and relevant education that will prepare them to progress in a rapidly evolving global society. An integrated and comprehensive curriculum will be tailored to every student regardless of background, learning style, career or college pathway.
The vision of Wilson Preparatory Academy is to graduate productive citizens successfully to engage in life-long learning and careers in a global society.
